Loving Your Skin This Winter

With the thermostat hovering on the low end, skincare may likely lose priority in the wintertime. While we all look to keep warm as we leave home, it’s easy to focus on maintaining heat and abandon our skincare regimen. However, it’s crucial that you avoid falling into the skincare pitfalls that so many people run into when temperatures drop. It’s common to think that the sun may not damage your skin when it’s cold out, but the fact is, UV rays can still pack a punch, even if it’s freezing outside.

Here are a few ways to care for your skin this winter and reduce your risk of developing sun-damaged skin.

Why Do I Need to Monitor My Skin During the Winter?

Although you may have to bundle up for the next several months, take advantage of a high-quality skincare routine. Although the air is cold, this doesn’t prevent harmful UV rays from damaging your skin. For instance, if you spend long periods outdoors, your chances of absorbing harmful radiation from the sun increase. If you know you’re spending a long time outside this winter, make sure to apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to help protect yourself.

Avoid Long and Hot Baths

While a long and steaming hot bath can be an excellent form of self-care, it can wreak havoc on your skin if left unchecked. Although the hot water is relaxing, it can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, cracked, and itchy. Exposing your skin to the cold without providing it with a protective layer of moisture can create even more problems.

A hot bath every now and then is safe, but your baths should be short, and use lukewarm water to ensure you maintain moisture. Also, add products that seal moisture into your skin after baths to protect against drying out.
